Ahoy Rotterdam wanted to treat the city to a musical gift to commemorate its 50th anniversary (2021). The commission was awarded to multimedia artist Jonas Vorwerk via a pitch by art organisation Arttenders. The end result: a giant turntable, which was opened by King Willem-Alexander in mid-2021.

TELLING A STORY WITH LIGHT

‘I created a huge turntable, which was partly inspired by a record player’, explained Jonas. ‘You can operate it yourself: if you move the disc it starts turning, which activates the sound and light that we’ve integrated in the turntable. It’s a stunning feature that gets a positive response from every Ahoy visitor.’

For the lighting, Jonas joined forces with Tronix Lighting. ‘Their advice was simply invaluable: they helped with the ideas and they can deliver really quickly too, as they have so many products in stock. The technology was a challenge, because the turntable is in a public area so it needs to be both weather and vandal-proof. In terms of lighting, we eventually chose a thousand DMX-controlled RGB modules. As well as working flawlessly, they transform the turntable into a real eye-catcher.’

“The turntable needs to be both weather and vandal-proof”

Since the turntable’s opening, Ahoy visitors and passers-by have been treating themselves and the surrounding area to endless light and sound shows. Jonas stated: ‘Everyone thinks it’s incredibly cool. I also have a great feeling of satisfaction when I think back on how we made it. As a self-employed person, I work alone but go in search of the right partners who have the knowledge and products I need for each specific project. In this project everything simply came together like a perfect puzzle.’
