Lighting: necessary or purely aesthetic?

In 2011, Philips introduced a revolutionary product to the world of lighting: the EnduraLED A21 17-watt bulb. Designed to replace the 75-watt incandescent bulb, the LED bulb reduced energy consumption by 80% and lasted up to 25 times longer than its predecessor. The LED bulb marked a significant milestone in LED lighting, and in the years and developments since then, the considerable energy savings and long lifespan of LEDs have continued to prove their worth. Even more so in combination with an increasingly stable light output, more uniform LED colours, and warmer temperatures (Kelvin).

In the meantime, technology has also caught up with the sustainability requirement. So much is now possible with LED that we have started including all kinds of new applications, such as red and green crosses in car parks that clearly indicate occupied and vacant parking spaces respectively.

There are also many other options such as interior lighting, line lighting in buildings or bridges, LED strips in kitchen cabinets and LED line lighting under cabinets, shelves, bed frames and banisters. In short, there are lighting options now for places in which we previously thought lighting unnecessary. As a result, we now use more energy on balance than in the incandescent light bulb era.

The only limit is your creativity

Is that necessarily a bad thing? That depends on your aim, of course, but it’s good to be aware of this. For example, is the lighting you want absolutely necessary, or is it purely an aesthetic choice? And are you willing to accept or even compensate for the extra energy consumption that results?

Almost half of the energy consumption for lighting comes from nice-to-have applications. This is unsurprising, given the almost infinite possibilities and how great it is to be able to play with them. LED offers you the opportunity to realise the most extraordinary ideas, from extremely subtle and stylish, to in-your-face and bold. You are still only limited by your own creativity...
