High-quality controlling for excellent lighting performance

Lighting fixtures are getting smarter. In fact, you could now argue that picking the right control system is just as important as the right fixture, light color or light intensity. How exactly do your clients intend to use their fixtures? And which control system will optimise quality, design and performance?

Lighting performance comes down to multiple factors, such as sustainability, efficiency and functionality, and the right control system can unlock massive energy savings. While motion sensors ensure that lights are only switched on when strictly necessary, daylight sensors help match light levels to the daylight coming in from outside. Remarkably, these new developments can help cut electricity use for lighting by 75%, saving the environment and sparing your bottom line! Besides, motion sensors can even help increase security and leave people feeling safer.

Dynamic controlling

Those interested in optimisation can even link motion and sensors with daylight sensors to a dynamic control system. This versatile combination is ideal for spaces that require some degree of lighting for safety reasons, such as porches, galleries and parking garages, or even warehouses and factories. Once motion is detected, the fixtures automatically increase the light level to create a comfortable, effective and safe light scene, without unnecessarily using large amounts of energy. Users can even switch the light fixtures off altogether. To illustrate how much we can do, we recently fitted a shop entrance with LED line lighting to literally guiding visitors into the shop...

The right light color

With motion sensors, office buildings can finally stop keeping their lights on all night long. In 2022, TNO estimated that turning off the lights in offices and other large buildings at night could unlock energy savings of 1 billion kilowatt-hours every year. That’s as much as the annual consumption of 350,000 households! Smart lighting controls in the workplace has a major effect on the comfort, well-being and performance of your employees. Do your employees read and write a lot at their workstations, or do they work with small parts? In that case, cool white light (4000 to 6000 Kelvin) is very suitable, while warm white light (3000 Kelvin) is a better option for brainstorming sessions, presentations or meetings, for example. With flexible colour temperature control, you can even use spaces for multiple purposes and allow employees to set their own preferences.

The right intensity

Light intensity is also an important factor to bear in mind. A well-lit office should be anywhere from 400 to 750 lux. While precision tasks require greater light intensity (500 to 1000 lux), lower light intensity levels from 400 to 750 lux are usually fine for meeting rooms. Installing dimmable fixtures gives you flexible control over light intensity.

Safety and convenience in one

Motion sensors constantly scan their surroundings and activate the fixtures they are linked to as soon as they detect movement. Not only can users stop looking for a light switch or keyhole in the dark, but unauthorised intruders will also be deterred before they have the chance to get up to no good!

Both motion sensors and daylight sensors can be valuable tools in this regard, with the latter ensuring that the lights come on automatically as soon as it starts getting dark. Daylight sensors are an ideal way to eliminate dark spots and improve visibility in porches, galleries and parking garages, helping users feel safer.

Opportunities for Human Centric Lighting

No article on high-quality lighting control in the office market would be complete without mentioning Human Centric Lighting, also known as biodynamic lighting. By gradually transitioning from cold (6000 Kelvin) to warm white (2700 Kelvin) light throughout the day, employees start their day with demonstrably higher energy levels. On top of that, HCL improves productivity and concentration levels and lets employees go home more relaxed, so they sleep better and start the next working day well rested... Interested? Tronix Lighting can help you set up a system with a tunable LED panel with an eldoLED SOLOdrive and Casambi module.

Wired or wireless

There are many different smart lighting control systems to choose from, including wired options (DALI, KNX and DMX) as well as wireless systems (Casambi and Zigbee). Tronix Lighting has also developed its own in-house RF lighting control system, which is wireless and easy to set up and offers great value for money. Picking the right protocol depends on multiple factors, such as the situation, the customer’s needs and wishes, the chosen LED driver and more. Tronix Lighting can tailor-make solutions for every wish and every situation.
